Alone Together: Improvisation and Liberal Values
Jazz improvisation is a useful metaphor for exploring the role of values in our lives. Our liberal religious values help provide a framework for the choices we make, whether we are engaged in prophetic social justice work or simply going about our daily activities. They thus perform the same function in our lives as the harmonic progression of musical pieces—the so-called “chord changes”—perform in jazz improvisation. In this service we will listen to some jazz while exploring our own liberal values.
