Sermon: “Mystics Wanted – Apply Within”

We Unitarians and Universalists have always taken pride in the claim that we are the religion which doesn’t make you ‘leave your mind at the door.’  We are the great-grandchildren of the Enlightenment, when superstition gave way to science. Reason has always been our guiding principle. Or so we think.

So, if you were told that your attraction to our movement has more to do with intuition than intellect, and hunches more than reasoned argument, you might recoil. No childish myths and unexamined articles of faith could make it past the first hymn in one of our services, right?
Well, let’s see…

MEET OUR MINISTER

The Rev. Art Lester

Rev Art Lester was born in Idaho, longer ago than he cares to remember. He grew up in Florida, went to UNC in Chapel Hill and stayed on to open a Mexican restaurant. In 1980 he moved to the UK, where he studied small-scale agriculture for poor countries. During the 80s he worked in Botswana, The Dominican Republic and Kenya with marginal communities, before returning to the UK and training for the Unitarian ministry.

He has served in several churches in England and Ireland, and now is minister at Croydon (South London), where he lives with his wife, Gilly, a scriptwriter and playwright.  He has continued writing and publishing throughout. His most recent book, Letters in a Bottle, is now available on Amazon.

He has been a frequent visiting preacher to UUFP over the past twenty years, regarding it as almost a second congregation.
