EUU retreats are a fun mix of silent contemplation, meaningful exchanges and frivolity.
We gather on Friday afternoon, share a meal, and connect with both new and familiar faces. Members and guests are invited to participate in our in-gathering ceremony and group icebreaker before the evening winds down. Some may choose to retire early, while others stay up late to make music, mingle at the bar over coffee, or simply relax with friends. If you play an instrument, bring it along—our informal jam sessions or sing-alongs welcome musicians of all levels!
On Saturday morning, our guest speakers, Rev. Aisha Hauser and Rev. Michael Tino, will lead an engaging, participatory session centered on the retreat’s theme: “How We Create Determines What We Create.”
The afternoon is dedicated to workshops —engaging topics prepared and presented by retreat participants. In the evening, we kick off with a presentation from our youth groups, offering a glimpse into the RE program. That is followed by an Open Stage performance, where attendees of all ages can showcase their talents. Whether you plan your act in advance or decide to perform spontaneously, you will never find a friendlier crowd!
On Sunday morning, we come together for a worship service and closing ceremony, followed by lunch before saying our goodbyes.
You are welcome! EUU has a Safe Community Statement that expresses our communal commitment to respectful interactions when we gather together.
Questions about the retreat can be directed to the retreat organizing committee at retreatcommittee@europeanuu.org.
The venue: Cologne Hostel
We are happy to return to a favorite EUU retreat venue, the Köln-Riehl City Youth Hostel. Over the decades, we’ve hosted numerous events here due to its modern accommodations, excellent meeting spaces, and convenient location.
Easily accessible for most of our members across Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and beyond, it offers an ideal setting for our retreat.
Click here for the Youth Hostel’s website for driving directions & public transportation and location information.
The fourth-largest German city, Cologne was founded in 50 C.E. by the Romans under Emperor Claudius and called the ‘Claudia Colony near the Altar of Agrippinians’. Only the reference to the colony remains in the name, but it has been an important city ever since.

Aisha (she, her) is an accomplished religious educator, facilitator, author, curriculum developer, and anti-racism advocate. Her experience includes serving three UU congregations on both the east and west coasts of the US, and working for the Unitarian Universalist Association as Children and Families Program Director as part of the team that developed the Tapestry of Faith comprehensive curriculum.
In 2017, Aisha co-created the UU White Supremacy Teach-In movement. The teach-In resulted in two-thirds of our UU congregations making time to understand how institutional racism and white supremacy was playing out in a liberal faith community.
Aisha’s writings are featured in collections published by Skinner House. Most notably, she is one of the authors in the groundbreaking book, Centering: Navigating Race, Authenticity and Power in Ministry.
Aisha has served the wider denomination in many roles, including chairing the UUA Nominating Committee and as President of the Liberal Religious Educators Association. Aisha is the recipient of the 2018 Angus H. MacLean Award for Excellence in Religious Education and is a Credentialed Religious Educator at the Master Level.
Michael (they/them) is a minister with over 20 years experience in congregational and denominational work. Michael served the UU Fellowship of Northern Westchester as its minister from 2007-2022, and before that served six years as the UUA Director of Young Adult and Campus Ministry. They are currently also an affiliated minister of the UU Congregation of the Hudson Valley.
Michael is the author or co-author of numerous Unitarian Universalist resources, including the curricula Our Whole Lives: Sexuality Education for Young Adults and Backpacker’s Notebook.
Michael’s service to our faith has included a term on the UUA Board of Trustees, where they led the Board’s work to have our Association repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery, service on the first UUA Presidential Search Committee, and leadership roles in Allies for Racial Equity and the Southeast UU Summer Institute (SUUSI). They currently serve as co-chairperson of the UUA Ministerial Fellowship Committee, chair of the board of New York UU Justice, and vice president of the board of the SUUSI Foundation.

They currently serve as co-chairperson of the UUA Ministerial Fellowship Committee, chair of the board of New York UU Justice, and vice president of the board of the SUUSI Foundation.
What to Expect

How We Create
Determines What We Create
There is a Zen phrase, “How you do anything is how you do everything.” Building community, caring for the world around us while centering UU values – takes intention. When we center those values in the “how” of building community, we are already putting into practice a kinder, more equitable society.

Our Theme Speakers
The Lead Ministry Team of the Church of the Larger Fellowship: Rev. Dr Michael Tino and Aisha Hauser, MSW CRE ML
