Social Action Committee September Meeting

The SAC held its usual monthly meeting on September 17 and welcomed a seventh member, Richard Stammer from the Paris fellowship.

We discussed the recent successful trip by Eva Schupp to Transylvania, written up elsewhere, supported by a travel grant from our budget.

Janet MacNair reported on her presentation at the retreat in which she reviewed the most recent SAC donation decisions as well as the latest situation with the Handwerkerinnen (in Cologne) which received a donation earlier this year. This time the offertory and book table proceeds totaled over 800 euros, which will be given to the Neuland organic garden in Cologne.  Janet suggested that the next time we will be in Cologne (October 2026) we try to visit Neuland as an outing either the Friday or Sunday afternoon.

Then we turned to the subject of additional donations.  It was decided to focus our donation in the area of child online protection on one of the individual members of the two networks that operate in this field.  After some discussion, we settled on the Dutch Save the Children, as so many of our members live in the Netherlands.

Therefore, it was decided to allocate the remaining 900 euros in our 2025 budget as follows: 400 euros to ICUUW (International Convocation of Unitarian Universalist Women) and 250 euros each to Reporters Without Borders and Save the Children Netherlands.

Finally, progress is being made with self-publishing the collected columns written by Martha Hicks when she was editor of the Unifier.  The intention is to sell around 50 copies, possibly at 20 euros each at the retreats in 2026, with any surplus income to be available next year for the SAC.

The next meeting will be Monday October 13 at 7:30pm. SAC co-chairs Peter and Tina will present a proposed 2026 budget request for the SAC’s approval. It will then be forwarded to the Treasurer the following day in order to meet the deadline for the November EUU Annual General Meeting.
