The Social Action Committee Has Been Busy – Report of the July Meeting

The SAC is going from strength to strength. We have just recruited another member: Jody McBrien, who has recently taken responsibility for social action at UUFP following the retirement of Elaine McCarthy. Jody is a recent migrant from Florida, though she has visited us in Paris for lengthy stretches over the past several years.

Six of us held our usual monthly meeting on July 15. We have decided to recommend giving the September retreat offering to Neuland, which is an organic garden in southern Cologne that Janet MacNair knows and is enthusiastic about.

We also decided to make three donations from our EUU budget. First of the recipients will be Serve the City Paris (https://www.servethecity.paris/), an organization that assists poor city dwellers. Jody volunteers there. They and the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (https://hclu.hu/en), which is a Hungarian civil rights organization, will each be given 300 euros. Our final donation (of 150 euros) this month will be to OBCT (https://www.balcanicaucaso.org/), a Trento-based NGO that campaigns on media freedom, civil society, Eastern enlargement and cohesion policies. They may not need our money, but their agenda aligns with our values, and we think you, dear reader, should support them. We also marked down for future consideration some other groups that deal with freedom of the press and online safety for children, as well as the ICUUW, of which Tina Huesing is the current president.

Our final agenda item was to discuss the plan to send two (or three see information here) teens for a week in Transylvania as guests of our Unitarian friends in Cluj in September when they will be hosting young people from elsewhere in Europe. Two girls have already committed. We agreed to provide a fixed subsidy of 150 euros per person from our annual budget to assist with transportation.

If joining this vibrant group interests you, please ask us (sac@europeanuu.org) for Zoom details. Our next two meetings will be at 7:30pm on Wednesday September 17 and Monday October 13.
