The Social Action Committee (SAC) is pleased to announce its next EUU-wide project: Hats for Humanity. Do you knit or crochet? Do you have yarn leftover from other projects that you’d like to put to good use?

This project intends to bring together all knitters and crocheters to hand-make hats to be distributed to refugees in Europe and people in war-torn or impoverished communities.

We will use leftover, new and donated quality yarn (no synthetics please) to knit and crochet hats. This can be done at home and then brought to the bi-annual EUU retreats, or this can be done at the retreats themselves.

How can you help?

  • Knit or crochet a hat in any size.
  • Donate non-synthetic yarn (synthetic blend is o.k.) 100 grams of sport weight, double knitting weight or worsted weight yarn is good for making one hat. Bring to retreat.
  • Donate knitting needles. For hats circular (40 cm) or straight (15 cm) or (20 cm) work best. Bring to retreat.
  • Donate crocheting needles. For hats sizes H-8 (5 mm) through L-11 (8 mm) are recommended. Bring to retreat.

Details: We will be collecting and creating hats at the Spring Retreat this April. All hats will receive a “Hats for Humanity” label. Patterns can be obtained from the EUU Social Action Committee, or you can use your own design and patterns. Hats should be made from quality yarn (no plastics) in a variety of sizes. Photos should be taken of each hat (no people pictures please) and sent to knitting@europeanuu.org.

Our initial shipment will be sent to Ukraine in April.

Future products are being considered. Contact knitting@europeanuu.org with any questions.
